TRAILWERK WACHAU
TRAIL – we plan, build, and maintain mountain bike trails
WERK – we do the work ourselves (more on that in a moment)
WACHAU – we are based in the greater Wachau region
When the Benedictine Abbey of Göttweig made us the generous offer to make parts of the abbey forest available for the construction of mountain bike trails, our association was born. As passionate mountain bikers, we seized this opportunity with both hands. Our goal is to establish the Trail Area Göttweig as a sustainable fixture on the MTB map. This includes long-term and fair agreements with landowners, dialogue with other stakeholder groups, solidly built trails, good signage and route descriptions, and, last but not least, regular maintenance of the trail system.
Being allowed to build mountain bike trails on Göttweig Mountain is already an extraordinary gift. The fact that, over the past two and a half years, more than 100 volunteers have contributed over 8,000 hours of work to create nearly 20 km of trails and maintain them on an ongoing basis is simply overwhelming. This is the best proof that our association is far more than just a vehicle for assuming legal responsibility for the trails. Trailwerk Wachau consists of mountain bikers who collectively create such facilities for mountain bikers—non-profit, exactly as stated in our statutes.
Our work would not be possible without the enthusiasm of many like‑minded individuals. In order to maintain good relationships with all interest groups, we appeal to you to be considerate, friendly, and courteous when practicing this wonderful sport—whether on Göttweig Mountain or elsewhere. Our projects are granted a great deal of trust in advance; please confirm through your behavior that we mountain bikers truly deserve this trust.
We also ask you to confront us with any problems or suggestions. We will make every effort to resolve them or incorporate them into our work.
Happy Trails!
